When a lot of us were kids, our playgrounds consisted of see-saws, swings, sliding boards, or the neighbor's oak tree. We had none of the sophisticated, multi-level playgrounds of today. Moreover, there was little thought of safety as most of us played on asphalt! If we fell off the swing or out of that neighbor’s oak tree and were hurt, it was our tough luck! It was off to the hospital to get stitches or a cast, a little “pat on the bottom”, and we’d be fine. Our parents would have never thought of filing suit against a school or a neighbor for damages and liability.
Today, of course, things are much different. Our children and grandchildren are challenged by innovative and sometimes massive play “systems.” These more complicated playgrounds, along with changes in society, have raised concerns over safety for our “little ones.” Until recently growing numbers of child care providers and parents have had few choices for ground covers under their playgrounds. Wood mulches and different grades of sand or gravel were messy, didn’t stay in place, and required constant replacement. Thankfully, technological advances in recycling helped develop rubber mulch as a much safer and practical alternative. It
is almost twice as safe for children regarding injury from a fall and helps solve enormous environmental disposal problems.
Recycled rubber playground mulch will quickly overtake the antiquated ground covers of yesterday. Parents and providers will soon realize the many benefits even beyond safety and peace of mind.
